At HCPC we’re not just talking the Talk
- we’re doing the Walk (and run, and swim!)

The beginning of the New Year saw some personal changes around our Clinic!

The team at HCPC made a personal pledge to live the healthy messages that we try and convey to our patients.   We figured it was hardly credible for our staff to recommend our patients take up a   personal exercise regime, or lifestyle    challenge if we weren’t doing it ourselves!

At HCPC we believe that no matter what your age, fitness level or mobility  we can help you make an improvement.  You don’t have to be running marathons, as people do often forget the importance of incidental exercise, so the Team here decided to get movingto show you how…

So -in the spirit of “walking the walk not just talking the talk” – the Physiotherapy team began training in earnest over      December and January and entered the 2009 BRW Triathlon.

The Triathlon was held on 1 March 2009 and saw entrants complete a gruelling course of 400m swim, 10km ride and a 4km run at a cold, wet and windy Elwood Beach.

HCPC had 5 teams of 3 competitors consisting of: Michael Tricarico, Belle Wettenhall, Anesa Robinson, Lauren Stanley, Danny Low, Sara West, Matthew Licastro, Steve Antonello, Craig Murchie, Andre De Waal, Laura Gentile, Tim Dettman and Phil Brasher.

A hearty congratulations to Lauren, Belle & Anesa who won the Corporate Female Division in 2hrs, 32 mins, 53 sec.

Our mens team finished 70th out of a field of 1500!  A supreme effort by all!

We’re Walking to Cairns!

The Admin Girls – not so keen on competing in a Triathlon  - have recently joined the “10,000 Steps a day Challenge” and are “walking to Cairns”.

The girls have split into 3 teams with each team member needing to complete an average of 12000 steps a day for 200 days.

30 days down and counting - ask us about our progress, how far we’ve got and how we’re feeling!

Are you interested in making
some positive changes to your lifestyle?

We encourage you to consider one of the many programs we have on offer - be it a    Pilates Prorgam, a Gym Program,              Hydrotherapy exercises or Thai Chi.  We offer the services of a Nutrition Consultant and qualified Clinical Pilates instructors to support you every step of the way.

The Vitality 09 Programs have  been developed to encourage everyone to follow a sensible eating plan and exercise regime and reap the benefits making these changes can make.  Ask your therapist or at Reception for further details!

At HCPC - we’re here to help and support you in making some healthy choices.  We are proudly sponsoring the 2009 Wyndham Rotary River Fun Run/Walk - on 28.03.09 so why not join us as we attempt our own healthy living challenge - come and walk the walk with us!

Lumbar Disc Injuries

What is the Lumbar spine?

The lumbar spine is the area commonly known as the low back.  It is made up of bony vertebrae separated by an intervertebral disc.  The function of the lower spine is to support the weight of the upper body and to distribute the weight of the body to the legs via the pelvis and hips.

What is an intervertebral disc and what does it do?

Intervertebral discs are made up of a fluid centre surrounded by cartilage rings.  The discs act as shock absorbers and allow movement of the spine.

How do lumbar disc injuries occur?

Lumbar disc injuries most commonly occur as a result of prolonged periods in poor sitting or standing postures, poor lifting techniques, particularly twisting and bending, and prolonged periods in forward bending postures.

How does a disc injury cause pain?

When a disc is injured, it loses ability to absorb shock and its outer wall can become weak.  This allows the soft inside of the disc to bulge outwards and in extreme cases to burst through the outer cartilage, causing severe pain.  When the disc bulges far enough, it may press on nerve roots, which can cause pain or other symptoms such as numbness, pins and needs or weakness.  Depending on which is affected, these symptoms may be felt in other areas away from the back, such as the leg or foot.

How are lumbar disc injuries diagnosed?

A Physiotherapist will take a thorough history and perform a number of diagnostic tests to confirm or exclude the presence of a lumbar disc injury, and will then use this information to guide the rehabilitation process.

What does the treatjment and rehabilitation of lumbar disc injuries involve?

Treatment for lumbar disc injuries often includes mobilizing the joints of the lumbar spine, soft tissue massage, taping, an extension-based home exercise program, heat and ensuring adequate pain relief.  Many patients with lumbar disc injuries may also benefot from gentle exercises through hydrotherapy and strengthening of the deep abdominal and lumbar spine muscles through Pilates, however your physiotherapist will advise you on when they feel it is the appropriate time for you to start to ensure minimal flare up of your injury.
