There are different
types of arthritis but the one most commonly dealt with through physiotherapy
is osteoarthritis. This is wear and tear
of joints which can occur as part of aging, injury, overuse or due to poor
posture. It can be found in multiple
joints or in just one area.
People with
osteoarthritis in specific joints have symptoms such as swelling, stiffness and
pain around the affected joint. This can
be helped with heat, massage, gentle exercise and stretches. In some cases antiflammatory medication
prescribed by a GP can help. Many people
find daily glucosamines tablets/powder help ease pain levels.
Exercise is an
important part of managing osteoarthritic pain.
It helps with joint stiffness, pain, strength, circulation and can
prevent further degeneration. It is
important to keep in mind that exercise generally needs to be painfree and not
aggravate the swelling and stiffness.
It is advisable to
check with your physiotherapist before embarking on an exercise program or if
you need help with pain management.
