Melbourne Animal Physiotherapy is based in the western suburbs, with a specialist clinic set-up in Kensington. We specialise in the treatment of all types of animals, but primarily small animals such as dogs and cats. Lauren Stanley is a qualified animal physiotherapist, following completion of her masters in Animal Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland in 2007. Physiotherapy for animals is important in the prevention, cure and rehabilitation of many animal injuries, degenerative conditions and surgeries. Developed by Joseph Pilates in 1860, Pilates has evolved to a popular philosophy of exercise designed to tone the abdominals, hips and buttocks, whilst using your pelvic floor and diaphragm to control breathing.
Dry needling can be used to treat myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are defined as a local area within a muscle, which remains abnormal after the original problem has healed. This can cause pain that can refer to other areas, resulting in stiffness, tenderness and other problems.They are often 3-6mm in diameter and occur where the muscle is restricted, resulting in increased fluid between the muscle fibres.
Hydrotherapy is provided at the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre (80-82 Derrimut Road) in a heated (34 degrees) chlorinated pool. There is easy access via steps, and a rail all around the pool. Depth ranges from 0.8m to 1.8m.

During and following pregnancy, a gentle and graduated exercise program is essential to minimize the occurrence of back pain, incontinence, prolapse and other common pre & post-natal complications. It is well researched that exercising the pelvic floor and improving the general fitness of an individual before and after any trauma, such as delivery, to the pelvic area results in improved awareness and control of the muscles controlling the bladder and bowel, and also facilitates easier future deliveries. Pilates 4 mums classes are great in conjuction with our watermum’s program.
Podiatrists are the primary healthcare professionals for disorders of the feet and lower leg. They deal both with diagnosis and treatment, and also prevention and rehabilitation. We have two qualified podiatrists on hand, working closely with the physiotherapists to manage all sport related, paediatric, geriatric, diabetic and bio-mechanical foot problems.
Our clinic hosts a Tai Chi and Balance class for the benefit of balance retraining and relaxation in the elderly and/or arthritic patient groups. The class runs for 45min and encompasses Tai Chi movements, as well as various balance exercises, stretching and functional activities to assist day-to-day living. Our qualified physiotherapy instructor, Danny Low, has completed the Tai Chi instruction course, and delivers the class professionally and tailored to each indiviuals needs.
We are pleased to provide a watermum’s service for pre and post-natel women at the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre (80-82 Derrimut Road) Hydrotherapy pool (approx 34 degrees). Our qualified female physiotherapists conduct classes aiming to improve strength and muscle control in the pelvic floor and other areas, utilizing the buoyancy and resistance of the warm water. The classes run for 45 minutes, and are a fun and social way to exercise and meet other mum’s or mum’s to be.
Lauren Stanley is our qualified women’s health physiotherapist. She has experience in managing both male and female incontinence, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, prolapse, and erectile dysfunction. In combination with her pilates experience, Lauren is able to assess the strength and endurance of the pelvic floor via a real-time ultrasound assessment, and prescribe appropriate exercises to retrain any weakness or abnormality. Advice is also given regarding diet, fluid intake, exercise regime and management of incontinence.
