Dry needling / acupuncture

Dry needling can be used to treat myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are defined as a local area within a muscle, which remains abnormal after the original problem has healed. This can cause pain that can refer to other areas, resulting in stiffness, tenderness and other problems. They are often 3-6mm in diameter and occur where the muscle is restricted, resulting in increased fluid between the muscle fibres.

Treatment using dry needling involves a needle being inserted into the centre of the trigger point and gently rotated. The local fibres may twitch and the patient may describe a deep ache either at the trigger point, or in the referral area. Dry needling is very effective in both acute and chronic conditions, where significant changes usually occur within 3-5 treatments. The use of this simple needling technique in combination with conventional physiotherapy and advice has proven most effective in ensuring pain free range of motion and strength.
