Pilates uses scientifically proven techniques to strengthen the postural muscles of the spine. Developed by Joseph Pilates in 1860, Pilates has evolved to a popular philosophy of exercise designed to tone the abdominals, hips and buttocks, whilst using your pelvic floor and diaphragm to control breathing.
Following back or neck injury, the small postural spine muscles fail to activate well, resulting in instability in the spine and a large chance of recurrence of the injury. Pilates uses specialized equipment and techniques to re-activate these muscles and provide a “brace” for your spine to work from. The exercises used during equipment based pilates specifically target the weak postural muscles of the spine, thereby improving posture and reducing injury and pain.
We have many flexible options for pilates. An initial one-on-one assessment teaches you the important pattern of muscle recruitment and timing via real time ultrasound assessment, and enables you and the physiotherapist to determine the most appropriate program for you. We run group classes of 3 levels (masximum 8 participants), individual programs using the pilates equipment, or prescribe home exercises. The results are amazing, which explains the popularity amongst elite sports people, workers post injury, pre-and post-natel women, dancers and the everyday gym enthusiast.
Our studio has a range of equipment such as trapeze, reformers, bike, treadmill, rollers, fitballs, pilates rings, mats and rollers. Our clients have full access to the equipment by purchasing a 3 month membership, or casual sessions at very reasonable prices. All sessions are rebatable with private health insurance. We also offer a private pilates room, fully equipped with a reformer and exercise bike for those who prefer to work out individually.
